Greatness Efficiency Wisdom

  • Greatness is above, efficiency is below. Wisdom is the efficiency of the great or the greatness of the efficient.
  • The scientist discovers, the engineer designs, the businessperson produces, the technician operates and the mechanic repairs.
  • The rishi realises the spirit, the plough man produces food, the king rules, and the citizen pays the taxes.
  • Narada in heaven is the greatest of devotees. The householder is reminded of Narayana by his distress.

Greatness Genius Great Success

  • One does not become a ruler of a nation without being a great warrior or a leader, but often his next generation at home or in the party gets to inherit that privilege.
  • As civilisation advances, such an inheritance changes its hue and arrives at a point where every citizen inherits the endowments of his society.

Gross and Subtle planes

  • The physical, material plane in which we live is called the gross plane.
  • The subtle plane is invisible. It is an extension of all the three - physical, vital and mental planes.
  • If the flower is the physical reality, its smell is subtle physical. Around the physical body of a man exists the invisible subtle physical body.
  • The vital energy itself is subtle. How do we conceive of a subtle extension to it? Thought is subtle. What is subtle mental? It is only a further degree of subtlety.
  • Thought may be subtle.

Hobson's Choice of Enjoyment

  • Man's choice is endless, and exists at all points of action.
  • Life was murky, it crucified Jesus and destroyed its saints.
  • Mind was born in Greece before the time of Jesus, represented by Socrates. That was mind in the Individual.

Ideas, statements found in The Life Divine

  • Contradictions are complementaries.
  • Spirit will one day move matter.
  • Man, having two ideas, can act on one, ignoring the other.
  • Spirit evolves.
  • True happiness is when all the parts are growing.
  • There is absolute justice behind partial justice or injustice.
  • There is no waste in Nature as She does several things at once.
  • It is matter that makes the fleeting Ananda permanent.
  • Matter is Sachchidananda.
  • Time and Space are inner and outer extensions of consciousness.

Infinite in the Finite 2

  • The birth of the Individual in the social collective is indirectly touched upon powerfully, but has not become a branch of serious study.

- Its most important aspect is that the  Individual is a psychological organisation fostered by the society, which is mainly an external organisation.

- Education is the organisation with two faces that link it.

- Education gives the Individual the ability to survive as an individual and meaningfully draw upon the social reservoir.

Infinite in the Finite 1

The several processes of creation - an act that holds all those processes in it - viewing a result from all the other points of view - education as the organisation of the Mind - genius viewed from above and from below - teaching versus learning - intelligentsia - how to create higher types of individuals through teaching - definition of organisation

Infinitesimal

  • The Infinite is full of infinite infinitesimals.
  • Equally so, the infinitesimal is full of the infinite of another dimension since the Infinite Nothing creates an infinite of everything.
  • To know the Infinite thus is conception of the Absolute, to be that Infinite is to realise the Brahman in its own domain. Its perception as such lies in between.
  • The Finites we see around are,

- Material objects

- Events of movements

- Live men and their actions

- Thoughts and feelings of men

Infinity – Eternity – Spirit – Existence

  • Time is the subjective state of Spirit.

Space is the objective state of Spirit.

Endless space is infinity.

Endless Time is Eternity.

So infinity and eternity shade off in each other in the Spirit.

  • Truth is the objective state of Existence.

Spirit is the subjective state of Existence.

So infinite Truth and infinite Spirit is Existence.

Inflation

On page 390 of the Life Divine, Sri Aurobindo gives an argument that Ananda is the only thing man is aware of and therefore he looks at the suffering of humanity and is appalled while Truth, Goodness, Force (Will), Knowledge and Ananda are united to form the whole that man is. Thus unity is the greatest principle and the other five are the important aspects. All our thinking is only from one side, that is, knowledge or will or goodness. In fact, all these five aspects and the cementing unity are acting simultaneously and not successively.
