833. Transformation

The goal of yoga, tapas, etc. is moksha. The goal of integral yoga is Transformation of Man into the Supramental Being. To explain transformation as a concept in life is to say that something that is bad must be changed into good. This is not a satisfactory explanation. If a boy steals, his parents try to stop his stealing. When they succeed, it is great. This is correction. A Force that can change the urges of a boy who is now stealing into urges that will not permit stealing or theft is a Force of transformation.

832. Mahalaxmi of the House

Vivekananda saw a light between his eyebrows when he closed his eyes. To one who has a spiritual vision of his domestic life, his closed eyes will reveal a flame of preservative energy in his wife. Man earns and the woman organises is our motto. Mother adds a further dimension to it. The woman has a better capacity in what man excels in. A French writer said the European woman cultivates a home as the American woman organises a house. The American life puts a lot more things at home, especially in the kitchen, which engage the American woman to organise the house.

831. The Wisdom of the World

It used to be said that there are a hundred books on reading which one can have the essential wisdom of the world. Men known for their wisdom and wide knowledge used to be known as ‘walking Encyclopedias'. Around them an intellectual circle gathers. Genius is the vertically rising summit. Wisdom has the horizontal spread flung far and wide. What we call general knowledge is a large body of information. It is the power of memory that gains a distinction there.

830. Obedience vs. Punctuality

Punctuality is a value; obedience is a behaviour. There are schools that teach a behaviour as a value and others that teach a value as a behaviour. Boys consistently securing first class or A+ from famous schools of discipline entering professional courses, fail consistently from the first year. It means they were coached for the exams, and were not taught the subjects. Suppose a child is to be taught punctuality as a value, a value that will be with him forever, what should one do? A value is one which the boy values for itself.

829. What is Conquest?

Conquest is the device of Nature by which the strong ultimately and unfailingly gets the virtues of the weak. Mother says England has learnt very much from India. Trade and business where wealth is accumulated easily make men selfish, even aggressively selfish. The accumulating money has the inherent power to fortify selfishness. In India, the ideal for the vaisya is to support a large circle of people around his family. It is an ideal his mind out of spiritual awakening should choose. It is an Ideal which man slowly accepts. There is another avenue for this.

828. The Secret of the Veda

This is the title of Sri Aurobindo's book on the Vedas. The most popular of Sri Aurobindo's books, not the most important, is Essays on the Gita. Among the Western disciples, the book The Human Cycle has a pride of place. It has captured their imagination as He speaks in it of the successive ages of civilised humanity. There is a Western view that the Vedas are the childish prattle of an early emerging humanity. It is common sense, if not rationality, that one should know about a field to pass valid judgements on it.

827. The Genius of a Language

Poetry rose to dizzy heights in India during the first millennium after Christ. Life sagged and lost its vitality in the second millennium. It was after 1500 that Europe came to life and emerged out of the Dark Ages. As social, commercial life develops and spreads, PROSE takes shape and acquires refinement. This was true of all European nations. During this period, Italy produced an epic, England threw up Milton and Shakespeare, France fashioned the French language as an intellectual tool, German became an expressive language of scientific thought.

826. The Economic Crash of 1929

Seventy-five years ago, the New York Stock Exchange crashed. Its influence spread all over the world. Thousands of businesses and families were ruined worldwide. Unemployment that should not cross the mark of 10% touched 25% in the USA. Economists all over the world have intensely analysed the cause, but have not arrived at an answer satisfactory to them. It can very well be explained from the Theory point of view. Here, I would like to spotlight another dimension of Depression - Prosperity!

825. The Value of Man

Man values himself out of all proportions unrealistically. Graphically, it is represented by the proverb about the doll on the temple tower which prides on its supporting the tower. Man is an adept in giving away his own value - importance - to another and being unduly submissive to him. Mother says Man extends this courtesy of his even to his problems and diseases. He worries so much about an ordinary problem of his which is energised by his intense attention and possesses him as an octopus. She says the same thing about diseases.

824. The Boundless Finite

The space on earth or in the sky is boundless and appears as infinite space for us. It is intelligible for us to concede that conception as infinity or infinite space. But, strictly speaking, it is what the philosopher calls ‘the boundless finite'. Infinity is behind the veil there and is seen in its eternal recurrence. Infinity is of a different order than the boundless finite. The boundless finite can be immense, it can be indefinable, but it does not reach the dimensions of the infinite. The Infinite is composed of infinitesimals each of which can issue the Infinite.
