Insight is the Subconscious Reasoning
Thought is a conscious process of seeing the significance of a fact in relation with other facts. Subconscious observation sees far more facts thus related and more minutely. Intuition is direct knowledge that needs no reasoning at all. Reason, Insight, Intuition are the same faculties of higher organisation. In the stories of Sherlock Holmes, he first gets one clue that is on the right track. It is the first insight that leads. A second insight confirms to him the conclusion he has in his mind. It is not enough for the client or the police to be convinced. Obviously his one or two insights are not enough for him to solve the problem. He has to recreate the fabric of crime as he has conceived till the facts emerge in public to resolve the issue. Half wages was the first clue from Jabez Wilson. It speaks of a crime. Acid mark on the face creates the possibility of the presence of John Clay. The hollow sound of the floor, the dirty marks on the knee of Clay’s trousers more than confirmed for Holmes the crime. Yet he has to carry conviction with the Bank agent, police and Watson. John Clay emerging from below the cellar is enough proof to all of them. The first part is the right conception; any part of it may be wrong or amiss. The second part of it is the construction of the discovery. Watson raises a valid doubt as to the timing. Holmes gives an exact answer. But these answers will be exact if they are sensations. Even as perceptions, some error may creep in, as in his conjecture that the priest went to South Africa along with Woodley. A Rishi may see Clay entering the cellar as his thought is in a vision. The touch of the Supermind at any stage dissolves the problem and sometimes transforms the problem into an opportunity. That Touch is brought by the French Revolution to Longbourn. There was no Sherlock Holmes operating then. Each in his own way contributes their mite.
Incidentally, consecration at any stage completes the work by the forces of a higher plane. The creation of Evil through its earlier stages of error, wrong, mistake, falsehood has in it the genius of infinite creativity inbuilt in the reverse. More deliberate view, contradictions are complements are its expressions in explanation. Reconciliation of Matter and Spirit through energy in the Cosmic Consciousness and Spirit in the Transcendent consciousness is another aspect of it. Sherlock Holmes limits himself to solving the problem. Even this is a vast domain and infinite. Baker Street Force, dissimulation, the underworld that is available, the criminal history of one century, a rich unfailing grasp of human nature that touches crime, a love of danger all go each in its own way to close the gap in the transition. At midnight Holmes and Watson who sat for their Christmas dinner, suddenly remember Horner in jail and rush to release him. It is not a mere humanitarian act of sympathy but one bridge that closes the gap in transition. From Lydia to Jane was a whole world of new attitudes, reversals, self-affirmation of Darcy, self-affirmation of Bingley. In deciphering the language of the Joint – Dancing Men – Holmes enjoys travelling along the mental routes of one’s innovation, a delight God seeks in unraveling His own cipher at the universal level. Some of the greatest minds, of course, perverted, will be found among those who create viruses in the computer. To study that in Mind is Philosophy, in life it is Life Response. In Matter it is yoga. The need of dirt for a great Mental Insight will give us one great secret of social transition. There is a secret behind Being, Consciousness, Power, Delight, Force, Form, Energy, movement, Infinity, Finite, Eternal, etc. To know each of these secrets and comprehend it in the context of all other secrets may usher one into the Unknowable.
The Spirit becoming the Soul in Nature and evolving back to become the Supreme gives us the process of creation comprising of involution and evolution. Here the silly ideal of privacy of Kitty that looks outrageous, “made possible” the recovery. It appears to be a perverse reasoning and it really is. Darcy who condemns ruses in Netherfield, triumphs using one. He did get an inkling of Lizzy’s motive when he thought how justified she was in coming there. These zones of transition are all revealed after a fashion in all fictions. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was written to announce to the world that it is Time for Insight to be born. In his own sense, it is a comprehensive work, not from the point of view of Insight or Intuition in the plane of Mind. All his energies are physical, his facts are physical, his urges are physical, his impatience is physical. To conceive corresponding events or conceptions of Mind itself may reveal to us the secret of Mind which Mother says is easy. Of course the principles of this transition for the Mental, Vital, and Physical are detailed in Part II, Ch. 14, the chapter on Evil.
