618. The Impersonal and the Personal

Individual relations are personal. Laws are impersonal. When you are applying for a job, if you are qualified according to their rules, you are selected impersonally. If the CEO is personally known to you and interested in you, you get the job personally. The impersonal is a stronger qualification from the legal point of view. The personal is stronger from a personal point of view. When the personal interest comes to you impersonally, as you are qualified too, your position is unassailable in your scheme of things.

617. Decision and Determination

Work becomes more effective when the consent to it becomes a decision. Our knowing all about a work is knowledge. Our will, the executor in us, knowing all about a work is decision.  Decision is the knowledge of the will. Passion that develops about a decision converts a decision into determination.  A determination matures into a commitment when the whole being endorses it.  Mind has knowledge and will. Will executes what knowledge knows. Data, information, idea, knowledge is a series, as will, decision, determination and commitment.

616. The Power of Cleanliness

The Supramental Force needs cleanliness to descend on objects. It is the external form of cleanliness. Inner cleanliness is purity. Sincerity to the Divine is that purity.  Our tradition has two extremes. At the higher end, it says through proverbs ‘Cleanliness will feed one with food'; ‘Even if you wear rags, wash them daily'. At the other end people believe that if you clean too much, you will lose what you have. A devotee married into an affectionate family. It was very dirty. She started cleaning.

615. Swami Vivekananda’s Vision

Spiritually, all men are equal, all nations are of equal significance, darkness and light are the same, the great Mahatma plucking some brinjals from the plant and meeting the Simon Commission are the same. Indians were dark in their souls in the vision of Swami Vivekananda, while his prayer changed them into souls of light. The dark souls change into bright souls after a prayer, as darkness and light are the same.

614. The Place of Aid in Development

International AID has come to stay. Its role is considerable. The World Bank is an organisation of sixty years. Its prestige is so great that men like Clausen, the President of Bank of America gave up a salary of $1 million to serve the World Bank as its President with a salary of $58,000 per annum. The entire Western Europe devastated by the War was fully rebuilt with the funds of the World Bank. It would be interesting to know how many nations are there who have not been a recipient of Aid in one form or another from one country or the other.

613. Reliability

Matters of money, property, contracts, etc., are reduced to writing and often registered. All these are essential, inevitable and even inescapable. But the smooth enjoyment of that property and functioning of the contract depends on the unwritten relationships that are hovering behind the written word. This is an area where only reliability alone counts. It is a reliability of one's word, or honouring the plighted word. All good men fully vindicate their honour. But most men respond to circumstances or pressures from inside by desire or ambition.

612. Time is on Our Side

The youth in India are breathing the fresh air of Freedom. The contrast in attitudes towards life between the youth and the aged is marked. The youth are optimistic, hopeful, forward-looking, and feel whatever they do will be successful. The senior citizens are unable to recall any optimism in their youth. Their youth was characterised by pessimism, diffidence, fear, shrinking and doomsday thinking. This is the greatest gift of Freedom to us. Man feels free in every nation that is free.

611. Periods of Transition

Periods of transition are full of stress. There are transitions for the better. Other transitions are for the worse. A war effort is one such. The whole population must sacrifice several conveniences to fight the war. Each family has to risk a life too. When a nation is overwhelmed by waves of prosperity, the population that is overjoyed by that transition will also find it difficult to adjust to the new affluence. They too can generate a stress which is usually unseen or unperceived. It is nothing new for understanding, but we generally miss it.

610. The Westernised Mind

Man loves to follow the straight path. The desire to avoid the crooked ways of life is the noble impulse of a rational mind. But all paths to great accomplishments are not straight. This is true of many small results too. Common sense often defies the straight path. This is so because MAN with the greatest faculties is not always rational. Events, small and big, are irrational.

609. Opium of the Masses

War is a way of life in the history of nations. Bitter wars have been incessantly fought over possession of territory. That was the major cause of war. Territory is the physical mother of all that exists on earth. Man is a conscious living extension of the solid inanimate earth that gave birth to him. It is this truth that lies behind the tenacious struggle MAN wages for the mud of which he is the offspring. Crusades and religious wars were there, but they too were waged over a sacred piece of territory.
